ABCI GRADING SYSTEM
Click here to learn more about ABCI grading from Assistant Principal, Mr. David Frenck

ZGTMMS Report Cards and Interim Reports will reflect some grading system changes that have
occurred at ZGTMMS this year. The letter grades on each student’s report card and interims reflect the
student’s academic mastery of the curriculum objectives as indicated in the North Carolina Standard
Course of Study for each subject. Through ABCI Grading practices we will simply not allow any student
to “fail” a class. Students will receive grades on the following scale:
A = 93 – 100% - Advanced Mastery
B = 85 – 92% - At Grade Level Mastery
C = 77 – 84% - Minimum Grade Level Mastery
I = 76% & below - Incomplete
In the event that any student receives an incomplete on any graded assignment, test, quiz, report card
or interim report, they are required to retake/resubmit the sub-standard assignment until they pass the
assignment. Students that retake any graded assignment will receive full credit (not averaged with the
first attempt) to indicate that they have learned what is expected of them. Students that earn a passing
grade that they still wish to improve may also retake/resubmit to improve their grade for full credit.
Student behavior, attendance and effort are not calculated into the final summative grade at ZGTMMS.
Instead, student’s behavior and efforts will be communicated separately using the Behavior and Effort
Report (B & E Report), which is printed with each interim report and in the instructor comment sections
on every Report Card. Please find and click the link on this page to view the most recently revised
version of the B & E Report.
Although not every task and assignment that our students complete will be reflected in their final
grades, they will be recorded on their report cards and interim reports using the B & E Report as a
communication tool to the parent(s)/guardian(s). If there is ever a time when your child’s grade is
unsatisfactory or unknown due to a lack of communication on our behalf, please visit, email or call the
teacher, counselor or grade level administrator for your child. Communicating your child’s academic
progress is an expectation we take very seriously. Please help us to ensure success by keeping open
communication channels.
WHAT DO I DO IF MY CHILD RECEIVED AN "INC" (INCOMPLETE) ON HER/HIS REPORT CARD?
We know that many parents and students have questions about our new ABCI Grading System. We have collected some of those questions, found the answers and posted them here to help you react in a way that will support maximum learning for each ZGTMMS Cougar.
Q: What do I DO if my child got an “INC” or Incomplete on her/his report card?
ANSWER:
STEP 1
Find out why . Email, call or visit your child's teacher to find out which summative (graded) assignments need to be retaken or resubmitted.
STEP 2
Find out when, and make an appointment . Ask the teacher when the child can retest, or work with the teacher directly to ensure the work is done, and the student's learning is reflected in the grade.
STEP 3
Follow-up!!! Frequently remind your child of what needs to be done. Check on his/her efforts repeatedly to make certain that the assignment is completed to satisfaction and in a timely manner.
STEP 4
Check SPAN (Student/Parent Access Network) frequently to track your child's academic progress. CLICK HERE TO GO TO SPAN!!! If you need assistance with a new or existing SPAN account please visit the ZGTMMS COUNSELING DEPARTMENT or call 404-3636 .

Q: If my child retakes a test do the two grades average?
ANSWER:
NO . The higher of the two grades is counted on the report card. Example : If a child took a quiz and received a 70% on the first attempt, and then retook the test and received a 97%, the grade in the grade book would be 97% . _____________________________________________________________________________
Q: Are students ONLY allowed to retake graded assignments that they fail?
ANSWER:
NO . Students may retake any graded assignment if they want to improve on the original grade. Example : If a child took a test and received a grade of 85% (a low B) and wants to improve that grade, the child may retake or resubmit for full credit and a higher grade. If they try again, and happen to get a lower grade, the higher grade will count in the grade book. _____________________________________________________________________________
